Birds, nothing but birds. Naturally, but with a very special extra!
In Pusztazer, 1,5 hours drive from Budapest, a paradies for bird photography awaits you. Photograph bee-eaters, bathing and drinking birds at eye-level and herons passing by.
Professional Nature Photographer Bence Máté introduces you to the beautiful birdlife of his homeland, giving away some of the secrets of his amazing bird images. Claus Brandt helps you to improve your photography in his exciting and entertaining image critque sessions.
Don't worry, there is no need for a 600mm supertele. We grant you exclusive access to hides, set up by Bence in nature reserves with special permits, to drinking stations and watching towers. At most spots, a 2.8/300mm is the lens of choice, although at some hides you can never have enough magnification.
At 6 different drinking stations you shot birds at eyelevel. The shelters are pit-like thus you can photograph from water level while sitting comfortably. The distance to the bathing and drinking birds varies between 2 and 7 meters. The abundance of species and their actions provides an unforgettable experience for every nature photographer. During spring on a single afternoon 300 members of 15 species may appear to slake their thirst, have a bath or a chat with other birds
This hide is situated in the vicinity of the largest heron colony of Middle-Europe and only 70 m from the largest colony of Mediterranean Gulls in Hungary.
The lake and its waterlevel is regulated by the local conservation authority so that it provides the best conditions for the birds. The house is located in the lake. You can approach it through a corridor of reed wave avoiding to disturb the birds.
The house lends itself to shoot flying silhouettes. Flying birds can be followed both from standing or sitting position. Due to the swift movements equipments with autofocus and stabilizers are recommended. At 70 m there is an artificial island where 120 pairs of Mediterranean Gulls and 800 pairs of Black-headed Gulls are nesting every summer. Most of the 120 hectares of the lake are covered by reed, where 800 pairs of herons and egrets are nesting. The territory can’t be approached by car, thus a walk of 1300 m precedes photographing, which takes place mostly during dawn.
Most frequent species: Spoonbill, Night Heron, Squacco Heron, Great White Egret, Little Egret, Purple Heron, Grey Heron, Marsh Harrier, Common Tern, Whiskered Tern, Mediterranean Gull.
The watchtower has been built with golden orioles in mind, which is quite ubiquitous in this area, but is very difficult to snap all the same as it doesn’t like to stay at ground level. But it enjoys its voice at the top of the trees and is also likely to call them with prerecorded voices.
The tower is extremely sturdy so long lenses can be easily applied, the recommended focal length being between 500 and 1000 mm. The appropriate branches are at 4 – 19 meter. The height of the tower is 11.5 m, the inner diameters of the cabin are 360 by 180 by 220 cm. The sight is fantastic and you can photograph through four glass windows (160 by 100 cm w,h) in every direction according to the light conditions.
